This attack is another example of Ukraine’s growing naval power, which, despite having lost much of its conventional navy after Russia’s annexation of Crimea in 2014, has heavily invested in maritime drones to challenge Russian dominance in the Black Sea.
In addition to the destroyed Tunets boat, the attack also damaged three other Russian vessels, whose types are still being identified. These boats, part of the KS 701 project, are vital for Russia’s patrol and logistics operations in the region.
This successful operation follows a similar attack in May 2024, where two Tunets boats were destroyed and two others damaged. On that occasion, Andriy Yusov, a representative of Ukrainian intelligence, revealed that the mission involved two Magura drones, one of which paved the way through defenses before the final strike.
